Introducing Madam Overly, formerly Madam Ovary

I'm squinting a bit and feel oddly nervous despite having had a successful blog many years ago. I'm squinting because now I need +2.00 readers and everything I knew about blogging is different. I'm oddly nervous because I'm not sure if I still have anything left to say, but there's a stirring down deep, under my now thick skin, to return to the page. I am older and not necessarily wiser. The three children I used to blog about as Madam Ovary are living with us again, but they are 29, 26 and 22. Mr. Ovary has hung in there for 33 years and he still is amusing and infuriating in his own special way. I've been back at work as a college professor and administrator since 2008 and boy has that provided a great deal of potential material.

Just for today, I will introduce you to the very same characters from my life although some names need to be changed. My eldest, Lying Child, is now Soul Man. He has a stunning level of emotional intelligence and is struggling in this new wonky employment landscape. Middle and Oppositional, my 26 year old, is still an enigma but incredibly charming and laugh out loud funny - so let's call him Enigma Man. Baby Girl continues to amaze, the opposite of her brothers in most ways and fond of talking about how she senses we love her but don't actually "like" her because she is so unique. Let's call her Baby Woman now. My girls - my amazing friends - are all still in my life. Super Girl continues to conquer the most productive and stressful life with ease and grace. Earth Girl is a snowbird now and I miss her terribly. Campfire Girl is still a breath of fresh air at work and has done a kick ass job at establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with at the college. Cleopatra Girl retired and I think of her all the time, and need to reach out so much more. Ziplock Girl, who I met in a new mommies group 30 years ago, continues to offer unconditional love and the BEST recommendations for streaming tv. And Cool Girl is 82, as is Grandma Ovary. We also have several new ladies to add to the mix who I will officially name as their stories emerge

So, let's see where this goes, shall we? Am I too tired? Is Madam Overly OVER IT, and by it I mean a whole bunch of things, including my job? Not sure but writers gotta write and I think 14 years off has been plenty.

Madam Overly is Over It: The Death of Journalism

I should have named this Madam Overit, with “it” referring to so many quintessentially whacked out things in the world we now live in…keyboard warriors leaving devastatingly mean personal attacks in a comment section, for example.  How cavalierly they take this unprecedented opportunity to be heard across the universe.  How little they regard the recent reality when your best hope was that a letter to the editor would be published in your local paper or if you were going for the big time, a monthly magazine!  Maybe there was a reason we had fewer outlets for our opinions…since most of us have no idea what we are talking about.  Reading in the US is at an all time low.  Our educational system peaked in 1972 and it’s been a steady downward fall ever since.  Journalism, long revered as the cornerstone of democracy given its fundamental tenet of being unbiased, simply doesn’t exist anymore.  There is no where to find even a semblance of the truth....
